Reboot Integrity

The residents of Kolkata and Bengalis worldwide are all too familiar with the term "Ghush"(bribe in English). Kolkata runs on "ghush", this is an inconvenient truth that we all know and accept. From the traffic cops who bargain more than our friendly hawkers in Gariahat, to KMC officials who turn a blind eye to all your complaints until money has crossed hands. It appears their sight is magically restored then.

Our city had to endure the shame of our elected officials being embroiled in a multitude of scams, not the least of which are the Saradha and Rose Valley scam. Some of the victims will always remain nameless and faceless due to suppression tactics of the state government. Stings and exposes that have rattled even the strongest of supporters, such as the Narada sting where senior leaders of a party were caught accepting public money and the India Today sting investigation which exposed the real estate syndicate controlled by ruling party leaders.

It is of course no wonder that bridges and buildings are collapsing in Kolkata, when you realise that these leaders are trying to earn money at the cost of citizens health and safety. Where else can you see a sitting minister, being arrested due to corruption charges? But it is this syndicate that is at the core of the rot plaguing the fundamental structure of the executive in Kolkata and Bengal. It is time, we accept it, face it and challenge it. For Kolkata is much bigger than them and Kolkata has a voice. Time to use it.
