Reboot Safety

Reboot Safety

With news of horrific rapes, assaults, and molestations blaring out of our newspapers and living room TVs almost on a daily basis, we are being drawn into a constant state of worry and doubt — how safe are we in our own cities? And how can we make Kolkata safer for women?

Crime against women is significantly high in Kolkata. It is no surprise that the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has ranked West Bengal third (3rd) on the number of incidences on crime against women in the country. According to the NCRB data for 2019, there have been 30,002 incidence of crime reported against women in West Bengal and the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & System (CCTNS) implementation in West Bengal is a mere 30%-39%, second to last among all states.

In our land, where Durga is celebrated with such splendour, it is derisive that women are subject to heinous crime like acid attacks, rape, being burnt alive for dowry and human traficking. It is shameful for our city, once the capital of India, to be known as the acid capital of India today. Women’s safety calls for more focus now than ever.
