Reboot Safety

Reboot Safety

With news of horrific rapes, assaults, and molestations blaring on our TV sets and filling our newspapers on a daily basis, is any Kolkatan spared from being driven into a constant state of fear and worry for each and every member of our families. Do we feel safe in our own city anymore? Is Kolkata safe for women, children, the elderly or any vulnerable group?

Crimes against women are staggeringly high in Kolkata. It is no surprise that West Bengal ranks 3rd on the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB)'s list of states in India with the highest incidences of crimes against women. According to the NCRB data for 2019, there have been 30,002 incidences of crime reported against women in West Bengal. The implementation of the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & System (CCTNS) in West Bengal is a dismal 30%-39%, the second worst performance by any state in India. In our land, where Durga is celebrated with such grandeur, it is a shame that women are subject to heinous crimes like acid attacks, rape, dowry harrassment and human trafficking. It is shameful for our city, once the capital of India, to be known as the acid capital of India today. Women’s safety demands our urgent and utmost attention.

Does the increasing rate of crime make you worry for your loved ones? Have you had second thoughts about venturing out to certain places or at certain times of day? What do you think Kolkata needs to make its women feel safer in the city? How can we Reboot Safety in Kolkata?
